Photography - A very brief history of photography

With my new website, I have the option to write a blog.  Granted I prefer taking photos than writing I decided to give it a shot....yes...pun intended.  For this first one, I decided to write on what is photography and a very very brief history of photography.

Photography is a word derived from the Greek words photos ("light") and graphein ("to draw").  It is said that the word was first used by the scientist Sir John F.W. Herschel in 1839, and is described as the method of recording images by the action of light, or related radiation, on a sensitive material.

Nicéphore Niépce (born Joseph Niépce 7 March 1765 – 5 July 1833) was a French investor, now usually credited as the inventor of photography.  Niépce developed heliography a technique he used to create the world's oldest surviving product of a photographic process: a print made from a photoengraved printing plate in 1825.

As photography developed, some time in the mid 19th century, photographic societies—made up of both professionals and amateurs enticed by the popularity of the collodion process.  This gave rise to the consideration of photography as an aesthetic medium.

In 1853 the Photographic Society, parent of the present Royal Photographic Society, was formed in London, and in the following year the Société Française de Photographie was founded in Paris. In later years, similar societies appeared in German-speaking countries, eastern Europe, and India. Some of these societies were designed to promote photography generally, while others emphasized only artistic expression. Along with these organizations, journals promoting photography as art also appeared.

Photography and techniques for developing prints continued to evolve.  Towards the end of the 19th century and at the bringing of the 20th century as print media expanded, so did the demand for photographic illustrations. This demand gave rise to the need of smaller easier to carry cameras, hence the introduction of the Kodak brownie and the Leica camera some of the earliest small film cameras made; Hasselblad, Nikon and Polaroid (as instant camera) soon followed.

Around 1970s the digital camera was invented, in 2002 GoPro the company behind the digital action camera GoPro was founded.

In the early 2000's cell phones began to have the ability to take photos.  With cell phones having the ability to take photos, the selfie-stick was invented around 2011.   And you can the say the rest is history.....
